It is important to understand that leadership is an art and can be summed up in two steps: always face reality and act quickly and in a decisive manner on that reality.

When trying to lead an organization, it is important to ensure that all parties are viewing reality as it truly is and not as they wish or hope it should be.

By the way, this is as easy as herding cats!

So where would a leader start in order to have all parties viewing reality as it is? The leader needs to create a team atmosphere and attitude that encourages all team members to see things as they are, to focus on the way it is now, not the way each member wishes it to be.

As a leader you may be responsible for a small team or for the entire organization. Either way you need to be willing to take a hard look at your organization and make the necessary changes to achieve the desired result.

If one was to look back on their own experiences, you will probably find that most of your mistakes have been the result of you not being willing to face that reality and then take the appropriate action on that reality.

When you distill team management down to its core, you will find that it comes down to defining the reality and taking the appropriate action.

There is no room for hoping that things will change, waiting for the next plan to come along, or constantly rethinking or second guessing yourself. It comes down to taking action.

Let’s take a look at an example of reality for all global businesses: The Internet.

You may be part of an organization that was developed during or after the Internet came into its own, but what of those that had a legacy long before the Internet became a reality?

For those leaders to accept reality, it means that they need to accept the fact that e-business is here. E-business is not something that is coming, it is not something that will happen in the future, it’s here.

A lot of companies that had a legacy long before the Internet became a reality have done the business version of sticking their head in the sand.

If your organizations business interest is to compete and more so to win, you need to face reality and move quickly in this constant changing business environment.

Face reality today! Any business leader that chooses not to face reality is setting themselves and their organizations up for failure.

Take massive action on your reality. It is not good enough just to face reality; you must take massive and decisive action that reflects that reality.

Focus on constantly turning your business around. By constantly focusing on reality you have the opportunity to turn any bad situation into a great victory. With your head in the sand, you don’t stand a chance.
