Diagnosing Performance Shortfalls, continued

1. Is It A Lack Of Knowledge?

The Symptoms:
Problems Stemming From A Lack Of Knowledge
  • Fails to take action they could or should have taken
  • Takes action, but it is incomplete or insufficient
  • Does the wrong thing(s)

Diagnosing This Problem:
Ask the person/people involved to tell you the story of their efforts.
  • What were their goals?
  • How did they try to accomplish them?
  • What was their thinking?
  • How did they decide to do what they did?
  • How did they measure their progress?
  • What were the issues they faced?
  • How did they try to resolve them?

(As the individuals tell their stories, listen for what they knew and didn’t know. What were their assumptions? How did they investigate and explore? Always reference what they knew and the accuracy of their assumptions against your performance expectations.)

Your Response:
  • Clarify your expectations (what needs to happen, by when, and how)
  • Discuss the business idea thoroughly (have a conversation emphasizing the business idea and its implications for the individual’s/group’s performance).
  • Talk it through to ensure understanding
